All the fun of a traditional country the fête comes to Hatton Farm Village, near Warwick, this half term (May 24 – June 1) as a coconut shy, swing-boats, test your strength, welly-wanging and hoop-la transform the farm village into a wonderful Whitsun fête. The popular tourist destination will be bedecked with bunting and staff in boaters and blazers, as visitors enjoy a day of maypole dancing and funfair rides as well as meeting an array of farmyard favourites. Spectacular dog agility also makes a return especially for the Whitsun break with 10 dogs showing off their talents each day including rescue dog Loosie and champion pooch Pip weaving, jumping and running through tunnels. And new this year is the fabulous goat racing where Billy the Kid, Gordon Gruff and Nora Nanny battle it out not to be pipped at the post. Marketing manager Carol Blower said: “We all remember the fun of a good old fashioned fête and have tried to incorporate everybody’s favourites - it should be great fun. ” |

Billy the Kid takes to the race track |

Hatton Farm Village’s famous racing sheep are set for a quiet Whitsun as new kids on the block take over to perform goat racing on the sheepstakes track. Six goats have been in training throughout the winter to compete in the popular visitor attraction and shepherd and trainer Pete Mobley believes they are now on course to showcase their goat racing talents during the Whitsun holidays, which takes place from May 24 to June 1. “The hardest part was getting them used to being lead on a halter, particularly Gordon Gruff and Nora Nanny, but since then they have just breezed through the training. You can only teach a few animals to race, goats and sheep are happy to compete but they are quite stubborn; if they didn’t fancy running they simply wouldn’t bother!” said Mr Mobley. The sheepstakes track, which has seen the likes of Woolly Jumper and Streka Mutton compete for the last four years, will also showcase a range of new jumps and five obstacles designed for the inquisitive goats including a ramp to jump off, tyres and tubes to run through and bales of straw to scramble over. But it isn’t all over for the sheep, they will continue to race during the summer months. |
Youngsters learn the art of growing |

A growing patch has been created at Hatton Farm Village, near Warwick, as part of their activities for the year of Food & Farming, to showcase the wide range of crops grown by British farmers. A large patch has been divided into ten plots which will be used to grow farming crops, herbs, legumes, vegetables, brassicas, and salad plants. Farm Village manager Richard Craddock said: “We have many farm animals at Hatton but we wanted some space to help educate children about the importance of British arable farming and to help them see the link from ‘field to fork’. We will be planting and harvesting throughout the summer, so there should always be something to see. “Each plot will show a selection of plants from a particular family. Many of the crops, such as runner beans and tomatoes, can easily be grown by children at home so we also hope to encourage visitors to have a go themselves.” Schools visiting as part of their educational trips will be given a talk explaining the journey their food takes from ‘field to fork’, plus resources to take back to the classroom. |
