News - Press releases

March of the Penguins

The traditional farm animals at Hatton Farm Village, near Warwick, will be making way for a parade of Antarctic friends on Saturday June 28 as hundreds of children dressed as penguins descend for a special charity day.

The action-packed event is in celebration of Save The Children’s 90 years of supporting disadvantaged children across the globe, helping them access adequate healthcare, food, education and protection.

Youngsters are encouraged to come in penguin fancy dress costume and enjoy all the usual fun on offer at Hatton. In addition there will be Penguin Olympics for three to 13–year-olds including rock hopping and ‘gone fishing’ bean bag racing, a chance to test out footie skills with the Brazilian Soccer School and a range of side shows.

The charity will also be hosting a giant second-hand toy and book sale, a tombola with great prizes, and a hog roast.

Ann Bailey, secretary of the Leamington, Warwick & Kenilworth branch of Save The Children, said: “Hatton is the perfect venue for children to enjoy a great day out with family and friends, whilst at the same time helping support children of a similar age in countries around the world.

“There is of course a serious intent behind the day since 90 years after Eglantine Jebb brought Save The Children into being in the aftermath of World War I, the demand for our support is unabated.  400 million children around the world are hungry and a child dies from hunger-related causes every five seconds.

“The money raised from this day will help buy life-saving solutions such as mosquito nets, baby blankets, water filters, rehydration salts, thermometers, vaccinations and food,” she added.

The event is open from 10am to 5pm and costs just £10.45 a head, with under 2s free and a group discount available. Visitors can pre-register and find out more about the event at www.paradeofpenguins.org.uk

Baby & Child Show

A mother of two who opened her own children’s clothes shop in Hatton last year is hosting a Baby & Child Show to support other independent businesses in the area.

Karen Heap, who spent three years as a chamber business adviser helping retail shops and other independent businesses, fulfilled a lifelong ambition when she opened The Little Clothes Horse at Hatton Shopping Village, near Warwick, last September.

Karen now hopes the show, which will take place on June 13 & 14, will provide her customers with a chance to see other child-focused businesses in the area.

“I’ve been so lucky to have found a niche market in children’s clothes and accessories but customers are always asking me where they can find other quality products. Whilst we will be signposting customers to other quality businesses via our new website www.thelittleclotheshorse.co.uk the show will be a really informative event. It’s not easy to market an independent business due to budgets so this event is a great way of pooling resources,” she said.

There will be approximately 30 exhibitors offering everything from cotton nappies and baby photography to furniture, clothing and activities. The event is also being supported by Baby Lifeline, the charity which cares for premature babies. A host of experts will be on hand to offer advice, including health visitors, midwives, paediatricians and nutritionists.

JCB DRIVER DREAM

A digger enthusiast has been selected to officially open the new JCB Young Drivers Zone at Hatton Farm Village, near Warwick.

Four-year-old Joshua Mason has had a passion for diggers, trucks and construction vehicles ever since uttering his first word – ‘tractor’. Now his enthusiasm has won him the enviable position of being the first to climb aboard mini-JCB diggers and tractors at the unveiling of the new attraction on Saturday May 23 – the start of the Wonderful Whitsun holiday event.

The JCB Young Drivers Zone will provide youngsters with a child-sized track with ramps, tunnels, traffic lights and even a fuelling station.

Mum, Sophie Mason from Leamington, said: “Josh’s passion is verging on obsession! We have tried to introduce other interests but he just loves everything to do with diggers and we can never walk past a construction site without checking them out. He knows every manufacturer, make, model, and colour and is especially interested in how they work. He used to spend hours on the tractor trek at Hatton but this new attraction is even more up his street.”

The Wonderful Whitsun programme will also include demonstrations of sheep shearing by one of the top UK sheep shearers Clifford Mitchell, and bouncing agile pooches will be showing off their skills in dog agility shows. Goats will also be taking over from Hatton’s famous racing sheep for a special spring appearance on the racing track.

PEACOCKS MAKE A RETURN TO HATTON

Four peacocks have been given a home at Hatton Country World, near Warwick, following requests from visitors for their return.

Proud peacocks were once a common sight around the popular tourist attraction but have not been seen at Hatton for the past two years.

Farm village manager Richard Craddock said: “The last peacocks we had lived at Hatton for many years and used to roost in the trees at night. They would surprise and delight visitors by emerging from around a shop corner - strutting and fanning out their beautiful tail feathers. They just love to be admired and we are very happy to be able to bring them back to their public!”

The two cocks and two hens are getting used to their new surrounding in the farm village and will be allowed to roam fully around the site, which includes Hatton Shopping Village, by the end of March.
